UTHON THANI, NORTHEASTERN REGION, THAILAND – OCTOBER 6, 2022 Photos show the body of 34-year-old Panya Khamrab after he ended one of the worst massacres in modern Thai history. He attacked a daycare center in Uthai Sawan in Nong Bua Lamphu Province, where he first used a firearm and then a knife. The attack left 37 people dead, including 24 children, and 10 others injured. Khamrab was a former police officer who had been dismissed from the force in connection with a case involving methamphetamine.

After the attack, Khamrab fled the scene and headed home. Along the way, he repeatedly drove his vehicle into people and other road users. At home, he then shot and killed his wife and stepson before taking his own life. The exact motive for the massacre was never clearly established. According to investigators, however, his actions were connected to his personal problems, drug use, and his appearance in court in a drug case shortly before the attack.
