ECUADOR – JANUARY 9, 2024 Ecuador is currently almost in a civil war. The President has declared a state of emergency and ordered the army to neutralise dozens of gangs.
It all started in the city of Guayaquil, where masked gunmen attacked the local television station on 9 January 2024, taking staff hostage. They sent out a wave of violence via television broadcasts that reached the gangs in the prisons, where riots began to break out. Violence is being perpetrated against the guards.
The motive for these attacks is the escape from prison of the notorious drug lord and boss of the Los Choneros gang, Adolfo Macías. He is the one who probably ordered the whole thing to throw the country into chaos so that he could remain free.
