Execution of Kenji Goto by jihadist John

RAQQA, SYRIA – JANUARY 21, 2015 Kenji Goto was a Japanese war reporter and documentary filmmaker who focused for a long time on conflicts, humanitarian disasters, and the lives of civilians in crisis areas. He worked for example in Afghanistan, Iraq, Africa, and the Middle East, and he was known for trying to show war mainly from the perspective of ordinary people, including children and refugees. In Japan he was seen as someone who risked his life so that the public could see the reality of wars without propaganda.

In 2014 he went to Syria, allegedly to help or find Haruna Yukawa, another Japanese man who had already been kidnapped earlier by an armed group. During this trip, Goto fell into the hands of ISIS and was captured. The group later released videos in which it demanded ransom from Japan (200 million dollars was mentioned) and threatened to execute both captives.

Yukawa was murdered by ISIS first. In Goto’s case, ISIS then changed its demands and wanted an exchange for Sajida al-Rishawi, an Iraqi woman imprisoned in Jordan for terrorism. Negotiations about the exchange went on for several days, but ultimately failed. ISIS subsequently released a video that was supposed to show Goto’s execution, and on January 31, 2015, it was announced that he had been killed, probably near the city of Raqqa in Syria, then the main center of ISIS.

Also blamed for his death was the notorious “Jihadi John”, whose real name was Mohammed Emwazi, who became one of the most well-known faces of ISIS propaganda. This British Islamist of Kuwaiti origin appeared in ISIS videos as a masked executioner with a knife, and according to Western intelligence services, he took part in the murders of several Western hostages, including American and British journalists. Thanks to his English accent and cold demeanor, he became a symbol of the brutality of the Islamic State and at the same time one of the most wanted members of this organization. In 2015 Emwazi was identified, and a year later he died in a drone strike in Syria.
