GUANGZHOU, CHINA – JUNE 20, 2019 The security bars on the balcony turned the burning apartment into a trap. The parents and their 4-year-old daughter escaped the fire to get some fresh air but were trapped there. The fire slowly roasted them alive. The parents protected their daughter with their own bodies from the fire. She fortunately survived, but the mother died on the spot and the father was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Although this incident does not have a fairy tale happy ending, the local firefighters deserve a huge amount of credit. They were on the scene in just a few minutes and dispatched 16 fire trucks to the scene. Had they arrived on the scene just a few minutes later, or had they acted more slowly, it is certain that everyone would have lost their lives.
