Female protester run over by army vehicle

MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE – NOVEMBER 27, 2024 Woman protesting at an anti-government demonstration is hit by a heavy army vehicle used by local police against protesters. She was very lucky to survive, but suffered serious injuries and is currently fighting for her life in hospital. It should be noted that the driver of the vehicle probably did not hit her deliberately, because she was hiding behind a poster.

In Mozambique, widespread protests have erupted over the presidential and parliamentary elections held in October 2024. The ruling party, FRELIMO, which has been in power since 1975, secured victory, including the presidency for Daniel Chapo. However, the opposition and international observers have alleged electoral fraud. Opposition candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who received 20% of the vote, accused the government of manipulation and called for demonstrations.

The protests have been marked by violence, with police using tear gas and gunfire against demonstrators, resulting in several fatalities. Opposition leaders and their supporters have faced repression, including arrests and assassinations. Mondlane reportedly fled to South Africa, fearing for his life.

The demonstrations demand fair elections and an end to FRELIMO’s dominance. Many young people see this as an opportunity to challenge the political status quo in Mozambique. Western countries, including the EU, are being urged to support civil liberties and democracy in the nation.
