TAMARINDO, GUANACASTE, COSTA RICA – SEPTEMBER 22, 2022 Dead body of a woman was discovered by a fisherman in a river delta. Her age was estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old. She was later identified as a tourist, but her identity was never made public.
Witnesses stated that the woman wanted to swim in the ocean despite the dangerous conditions she had been warned about. The Tamarindo area is known for its strong rip currents, which claim several lives every year.
Strong rip current can be faster than an Olympic professional swimmer can swim. The best protection against them is prevention – do not enter the water if there is a red flag on the beach, or if you see a darker current of water between the waves. If you get caught in a current, stay calm – panic can quickly lead to exhaustion. It is important not to try to swim against the current, but perpendicular to it (parallel to the shoreline). If you feel exhausted, tread water and call for help.
