BANIYAS, SYRIA – MARCH, 2025 Syrian town of Baniyas has witnessed a massacre that is shocking the world. Several hundred mostly Alwite civilians were executed during two days of fighting between pro-government forces and Islamic armed groups. Some sources speak of up to 1 000 victims.
According to available information, revenge by the Islamists was the motive for the massacre. They faced oppression for the duration of the Bashar al-Assad regime and now that they have come to power, they have decided to take revenge. This has drawn a lot of criticism on the current President Ahmed al-Sharaa for failing to ensure the safety of the civilian population.
Syrian and international human rights organisations report that the armed groups have carried out systematic ethnic cleansing. Eyewitnesses report that civilians were herded into the square where they were executed. Some of the population was taken away and their fate remains unknown.
