BIJNOR DISTRICT, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA Video shows the gruesome aftermath of a leopard attack. The man was found dead in a remote area with severe wounds to his chest and neck. The absence of tissue suggests that the leopard fed on his body after he had died.
Once specialists determined that the injuries were consistent with a leopard attack, authorities launched a search for the animal. The leopard was eventually captured and euthanized.
Leopards generally do not see humans as prey, and attacks are usually linked to sudden close encounters. A leopard may attack if it is surprised in tall grass or while hiding and feels threatened or cornered. Protecting its cubs is another possible reason for aggressive behavior.
If you encounter a leopard in the wild, remain calm and avoid turning your back on it. Slowly back away, and never position yourself between a leopard and its cubs. Making yourself appear larger, such as by spreading your arms, may also help. If the animal attacks, fight back and target vulnerable areas such as the eyes and nose while protecting your face and neck.
