BELIZE – JANUARY 30,2026 Fatal traffic accident occurred on Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway. Police officer Marcos Acal was knocked off his service motorcycle by an inattentive driver of a fast-moving car. The impact caused him multiple fractures, including an open fracture of the thigh, and completely tore off his left arm.

Acal remained conscious after the accident but was in very critical condition. Bystanders quickly gathered around him and provided first aid – it was necessary to stop massive bleeding using tourniquets. However, his condition was so severe that he was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.
The driver of the involved car fled the scene of the accident. Police were able to track him down relatively quickly. The suspect is 30-year-old Guatemalan Juan Carlos Estrada Prado. He was arrested and is currently facing charges of negligent homicide, failure to stop and render aid, and driving without due care and attention. His guilt will be decided by the court.
