RAISEN, MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA – SEPTEMBER 2, 2026 40-year-old prisoner Nilesh Thakur shot prison guard Digvijay Singh Tomar during an attempted escape from a prison in Raisen. Nilesh was carrying a homemade pistol and fired at the guard after he refused to open the gate.
Digvijay Singh Tomar suffered a gunshot wound to the upper back and was taken to AIIMS hospital in Bhopal. Nilesh was subsequently apprehended by other members of the prison staff.
Investigators are now determining how the weapon was brought into the prison. The case also led to the suspension of one of the guards over suspected serious security failures.
