GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA – FEBRUARY 15, 2025 Imam Muhsin Hendricks was a South African activist and spiritual leader who became the first openly gay Muslim imam. He dedicated himself to supporting the LGBTQ+ community within the Muslim world and promoted openness and acceptance among Muslims with different sexual orientations or gender identities. His work involved encouraging Muslims to embrace greater tolerance and understanding toward sexual and gender minorities, and he advocated for change within Islam to make it more inclusive and open.
His overly open opinions became unacceptable to many traditional Muslims and he made many enemies. On 15 February 2025, two armed Islamists attacked him as he was driving his car. Imam Muhsin Hendricks unfortunately did not survive the attack.
It should be noted that the perpetrators have not yet been caught and therefore their motive cannot be confirmed with certainty. However, it is very likely that the motive was the aforementioned, as he had no other enemy.
