GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE – JANUARY 10, 2025 Palestinian journalist Saed Sabri Abu Nabhan, a freelance cameraman working for Anadolu Agency, was fatally shot in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza Strip.
According to available reports, the Israeli army first surrounded an area in the Al-Jadeed camp where many journalists were present and then opened fire. Footage from the scene shows an injured person being carried on a stretcher while Abu Nabhan is seen trying to escape with his equipment in hand. At that moment, he was struck by a bullet from a long-range rifle and fell to the ground. Witnesses hesitated to approach him, fearing further gunfire.
The Palestinian news agency Wafa confirmed his death. Abu Nabhan’s killing brought the number of Palestinian journalists killed in Gaza since October 2023 to 203. Additionally, reports indicate 399 journalists have been injured, and 43 detained.
The Israeli military continues its operations in Gaza, which have resulted in over 46,000 deaths—primarily women and children—since October 7, 2023, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Saed Abu Nabhan’s funeral was attended by hundreds of Palestinians who expressed their grief and outrage over the ongoing violence against journalists in the region.
This tragic event highlights the dangers faced by journalists covering conflicts and underscores the need for international protection for media workers in war-affected areas.
