MALI Footage shows the aftermath of an attack on a Malian military unit, which left a large number of dead soldiers at the scene. The exact location, date, and number of casualties were never made public.
The attack was reportedly carried out by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), a jihadist organization affiliated with al-Qaeda that is fighting government forces in Mali and seeking to establish an Islamist state. JNIM has significantly strengthened in recent years and regularly ambushes military convoys, attacks military bases, and disrupts supply routes. The Malian army is fighting the group with support from Russia’s Africa Corps, but it has still been unable to regain full control over large parts of the country.
