ASANSOL, WEST BENGAL, INDIA – APRIL 25, 2026 43-year-old Debdeep Chatterjee was beaten to death by a group of young men in the early hours of the morning outside a residential complex. His wife, Piyali Chatterjee, and their 10-year-old son witnessed the brutal attack.

The family was returning by car from a birthday celebration at around 1 a.m. when their vehicle collided with a parked motorcycle outside the residential complex. Several young men who were sitting nearby then approached the car and started arguing with Debdeep. Although he apologized to them, the confrontation quickly escalated into a physical assault.
According to his wife’s statement, the attackers repeatedly beat the man while she and their son begged them to stop. One of them eventually struck him and pushed him to the ground. As Debdeep fell, his head hit the roadway, and he lost consciousness. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital.
Debdeep was a stockbroker and a supporter of the Indian National Congress. Representatives of the party accused supporters of the rival Trinamool Congress (TMC) of being involved in the attack. However, a local politician, Animesh Das, denied any connection to the attackers.
Police launched an investigation, and the victim’s body was sent for an autopsy. The case also sparked political tensions, with members of the Congress party subsequently holding a protest outside the police station and demanding the arrest of those responsible.
