SAN PEDRO DE MACORÍS, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ‑ AUGUST 25, 2025 In the Miramar area, behind the Portofino restaurant, a strange and tragic incident occurred. Forty-year-old Jonathan Astacio Arias entered a pool holding a knife in his hand and wearing no swimwear. Suddenly, he suffered some kind of seizure in the water, which prevented him from getting out and led to his drowning. None of the onlookers dared to enter the water until he had stopped showing signs of life, as everyone was afraid of the knife.
When he was pulled out, other restaurant patrons attempted first aid through resuscitation. All efforts to save his life were in vain. When paramedics arrived, he was declared dead.
The police have launched an investigation, focusing mainly on questioning witnesses and analyzing security camera footage. Entering a pool fully clothed with a knife in hand is highly unusual behavior, and a mental disorder cannot be ruled out.
