PARIS, FRANCE – JUNE 11, 1981 Issei Sagawa, also known as Pang, was a man of Japanese nationality, born on April 6, 1948 in the Japanese city of Kobe, who murdered the Dutch student Renée Hartevelt on June 11, 1981.

Sagawa was born prematurely to his parents and it is almost a miracle that he survived. In 1977, when he was 28 years old, he emigrated to France, where he wanted to obtain the prestigious Ph.D. from literature.

Renée Hartevelt was his classmate whom he met at university. On that fateful night, he invited her to his apartment for dinner under the pretense that he needed help translating German poetry. When she reached him, he shot her in the back of the head with a rifle. He killed her in order to taste human flesh. Immediately after she fell to the ground, he tried to bite her. However, he did not succeed, so he went to buy a butcher knife. Later, Sagawa stated that he specifically chose this girl because of her health and beauty. He stated that he wanted to drain her energy.

Sagawa also stated that he fell unconscious from shock immediately after the shot. He woke up and got back on his feet, motivating himself that he had an important task ahead of him. First he started eating her rear and thighs. But even before that he had sex with her dead body. During police questioning, he stated that he was fascinated by the color of human fat. For two whole days he consumed her flesh. It is said that one could submit to the taste of raw tuna meat. He then tried to dispose of the body in the lake, but was spotted by the police.

During a police search of his apartment, the police found body parts of the sleeping victim in the freezer. He probably intended to continue consuming. When he got to trial, he was found to be insane and committed to a mental institution. Later, however, it was decided to transfer him to Japan. There he was again subjected to a psychological examination, but was found to be healthy. Japanese psychologists said that the only motive for the murder was sexual perversion. Due to bytocratic errors, he could not be imprisoned again in Japan and remained free.

He became a local celebrity in Japan. He used to be a guest on various TV shows and even various culinary reviews. He appeared in several films and several books were written about him. He died in Tokyo on November 24, 2022, aged 73, of pneumonia.
