DÖRTYOL, HATAY PROVINCE, TURKEY – JULY 3, 2026 45-year-old Turgay Şimşir, who reportedly had psychological and mental health problems according to local media, doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire in the city center. Passersby immediately used fire extinguishers on him and managed to put out the flames before emergency services arrived.
Şimşir suffered extensive burns and was initially taken to Dörtyol State Hospital, from where he was later transferred to a hospital in Adana due to the severity of his condition. According to later reports, he fought for his life in the hospital for nine days before succumbing to his injuries.
According to local media, Şimşir had been cleaning car windows on the streets before the incident and was warned by municipal police because of this activity. Reports stated that he became angry after being warned and subsequently set himself on fire. The incident was captured by security cameras.
