AUSTIN, TEXAS, USA – SEPTEMBER 10, 2025 Police officer Adam Reinhart of the Austin Police Department was conducting a routine curfew check in the Azie Morton Road area near Umlauf Sculpture Garden when he noticed a stolen vehicle in the parking lot.
As he began initiating its tow, two people emerged from a nearby wooded area: 30-year-old Kay Smith and her boyfriend, 30-year-old Brandon Thompson. The officer attempted to identify them and gave the standard command to show their hands. Thompson ignored the order, drew a gun, and fired, hitting his girlfriend in the back of the head and the officer in the abdomen. He then fled into a neighboring district.

Kay Smith was transported to the hospital, where she was later declared brain dead. Officer Reinhart received medical treatment and was released in stable condition.
Following the incident, a large-scale manhunt for the suspect was launched involving multiple law enforcement agencies. He was eventually found in a neighboring district attempting to break into a house. The homeowner confronted and shot him. After receiving medical treatment, he was taken into custody and now faces charges of attempted murder of a police officer and burglary. Additional charges related to the killing of his girlfriend are expected to be filed.
