ESMERALDAS, ECUADOR – SEPTEMBER 22, 2025 In a state prison in the Esmeraldas province near the Colombian border, a clash occurred between inmates from two rival gangs. The violence claimed at least 10 lives. Some of the prisoners were gutted or otherwise massacred.
Organized crime has turned Ecuador, a country of 17 million, into one of the most dangerous countries in the world. The country lies between two major cocaine exporters – Colombia and Peru – making it an attractive location for gangs and cartels fighting for power. Gang wars have also spread into overcrowded Ecuadorian prisons, where since 2021 there have been approximately 500 murders.
