MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – MARCH 20, 1994 Ilaria Alpi was an Italian journalist murdered in Somalia along with her cameraman Miran Hrovatin. She was in Somalia working on a case of illegal arms trafficking and toxic waste.

Their killer was never caught. In 2000, Somali citizen Hashi Omar Hassan was sentenced to 26 years in prison. But after 17 years in prison, he turned out to be innocent. He was paid EUR 3 million for his wrongful conviction.
