KUKARETA, YOBE STATE, NIGERIA – APRIL 23, 2026 At least 24 militants linked to the terrorist group Boko Haram were killed during an unsuccessful attack on the community of Kukareta. The attack took place shortly after midnight, and the confrontation with government forces lasted nearly three hours.
Soldiers involved in the military operation Operation HADIN KAI quickly responded to the attack and forced the assailants to retreat through a coordinated intervention. During the subsequent clash, at least 24 militants were killed, and security forces also seized a large stockpile of weapons.
Nigeria has been facing a serious security crisis for a long time, particularly in the northeastern part of the country, where the Islamist armed groups Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) operate. Their attacks include raids on military bases, suicide bombings, kidnappings of civilians, and assaults on villages. Despite long-running military operations, security forces have been unable to completely eliminate this threat.
