YAHUKIMO REGENCY, PAPUA HIGHLANDS, INDONESIA – MAY 19, 2026 Violent attack occurred in which eight gold miners were killed. These were civilians who were searching for gold in rivers and streams in the area, which is a relatively common but dangerous activity in Papua.
Papua is the easternmost part of Indonesia and has long been one of the conflict regions. Armed separatist groups operate there, seeking independence from Indonesia. These groups occasionally clash with the Indonesian army and police, but their actions often also affect civilians or workers in remote areas.
According to Indonesian authorities, one of these separatist armed groups, operating under the name TPNPB (West Papua National Liberation Army), is responsible for the attack. However, the group in some cases claims that its targets are not civilians but individuals it considers linked to state security forces.
The Yahukimo region, where the incident took place, is very difficult to access, mountainous and densely forested, which makes it an area with limited state control. This is also where both gold miners and armed groups often operate.
