GUAYAQUIL, GUAYAS, ECUADOR – OCTOBER 17, 2026 52-year-old priest Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari died after a heavy wooden crucifix fell on him during Mass at the Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro church. The accident occurred approximately 27 minutes after the start of the service, which was being livestreamed on the priest’s Facebook profile. The crucifix suddenly came loose from the wall and struck the priest directly in the head.

Worshippers present in the church immediately rushed to help and called emergency services. However, the priest succumbed to his severe head injuries shortly afterward.

Police launched an investigation to determine why the massive cross came loose from its wall mount. During a subsequent memorial service, clergy urged worshippers not to interpret the tragic accident as a sign from God. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, a member of the Redemptorist order, was remembered as a humble and devout man.
