KENYA In December 2007, a wave of post-election protests and violence erupted in Kenya that lasted until February 2008. The results of the presidential election were highly disputed, fuelling hatred between political and religious groups. Torture, murder, rape and the burning of houses took place.
One of the victims of this mass wave of violence was the man in the photograph. He was raped by a group of assailants and his face was burned in the process. He fortunately survived, but suffered third-degree burns to his face and neck. He had to undergo several extensive plastic surgeries to reconstruct his face.
