IONEȘTI, VÂLCEA COUNTY, ROMANIA – SEPTEMBER 22, 2026 Body of 28-year-old Valentina Ioana was found inside a gray suitcase in the Olt River near the Romanian city of Vâlcea. Local fishermen noticed the suitcase, pulled it out of the water, and called emergency services after discovering the body.
A forensic examination confirmed a violent death caused by traumatic and hemorrhagic shock. The woman had suffered two head injuries, five broken ribs, and additional injuries, abrasions, and wounds on her calves. According to investigators, these may have been caused by blows from blunt objects as well as a sharp weapon.
The main suspect is 30-year-old Gheorghe V. B., who had been living with Valentina Ioana for several months. Reddish-brown stains were found on a mattress in their bedroom. The suspect allegedly left Romania before the body was discovered and, according to available information, fled to Hungary. An arrest warrant was issued for him in absentia.
According to further reports, Valentina’s former boyfriend, Vlad Balteanu, was also identified as a suspect. He had allegedly beaten and raped her repeatedly in the past. He was subsequently arrested in Switzerland, where he had fled after leaving Romania. On September 28, he turned himself in to police in the city of St. Gallen, and on October 6, he was handed over to Romanian authorities. On October 9, he appeared before prosecutors in Vâlcea County for questioning but exercised his right to remain silent. The investigation into Valentina Ioana’s murder is ongoing, and the suspect’s guilt has not yet been established by a final court ruling.
