MOSCOW, RUSSIA – DECEMBER 17, 2024 Russian Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of the country’s Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces, was killed alongside his assistant. The attack involved a bomb hidden in an electric scooter, which exploded outside his apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt.
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) claimed responsibility for the operation, calling Kirillov a war criminal due to alleged use of banned chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces. Russian authorities labeled the incident a terrorist attack and launched an investigation.
The day after the bombing, a 29-year-old man of Uzbek origin was arrested and confessed to planting and detonating the bomb. The assassination of General Kirillov, accused of deploying chemical weapons that hospitalized thousands of Ukrainian soldiers, drew strong reactions. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev vowed retaliation, describing the act as terrorism.
