NEPAL – SEPTEMBER, 2025 During the second day of anti-government protests in Nepal, some demonstrators targeted members of the political elite. Angry crowds attacked the homes of several influential politicians, set their property on fire, and in some cases even entered government buildings. The unrest erupted after security forces had violently cracked down on mostly student demonstrations the previous day, during which at least 19 people were killed. The victims included underage students, triggering widespread outrage across the country and contributing to a further escalation of the violence.
The protests, known as the Gen Z movement, originally began as peaceful demonstrations against widespread corruption, nepotism, and long-standing dissatisfaction with the political situation in Nepal. The immediate trigger was the government’s ban on major social media platforms, which officials justified as a measure to combat misinformation. However, young people viewed the ban as an attempt to silence criticism of the government and argued that the real issues were corruption, the lack of job opportunities, and the long-term failure of state institutions. After the bloody police crackdown, the protests quickly turned into widespread unrest, ultimately leading to the resignation of Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli and further political changes.
