SANFORD, FLORIDA, USA – FEBRUARY 26, 2012 In the gated residential community of The Retreat at Twin Lakes, an incident occurred that significantly influenced the debate over race relations in the United States. Seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin was returning from a local convenience store when he was noticed by 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Zimmerman called the police and reported the teenager as suspicious. Although the dispatcher advised him not to follow Martin, Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and went after him.

Shortly afterward, a confrontation occurred between the two, during which Zimmerman fatally shot the unarmed Martin at close range with a single shot to the chest. Martin died at the scene from his injuries. The investigation was unable to conclusively determine exactly how the confrontation began because there were no direct eyewitnesses. Prosecutors argued that Zimmerman initiated the confrontation, while the defense maintained that he acted in lawful self-defense.
Zimmerman was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, but in July 2013 a jury acquitted him of all charges. The verdict sparked widespread protests across the country and became one of the main catalysts for the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement, which draws attention to racial inequality and violence against the African American community. Federal authorities later announced that they would not file civil rights charges against Zimmerman.
