Lynching and other forms of vigilante justice remain relatively common in parts of Africa. Distrust in state institutions can lead people to believe that criminals will not be punished unless they take matters into their own hands. Corruption can further reinforce this perception. Cultural attitudes also play a role, with mob violence still viewed as normal or socially tolerated in some communities, including, in some cases, by police officers. Theft can also have a particularly serious impact in poorer communities, where people may own relatively few possessions and depend heavily on them.
