After a thief was caught attempting to steal, a bloodthirsty crowd quickly surrounded him, intent on taking justice into their own hands. They beat him so severely that he could barely remain on his feet. The mob then doused him with an unidentified flammable substance, likely gasoline, and set him on fire. Although the video does not show what happened afterward, it is highly likely that the incident ended with his death.
Vigilante justice remains widespread in many parts of Africa despite efforts by governments to combat it. In some communities, the practice is so deeply ingrained that even police officers may turn a blind eye. At its core, however, it is often driven by distrust in the justice system and the belief that suspects will not receive adequate punishment. For people living in poverty, theft can also represent a serious threat to their livelihood, as they may have very little property and depend heavily on what they own.
If you ever witness a lynching, do not get involved. Physically attacking a suspect is a serious violation of their human rights and can expose you to severe criminal or civil consequences. Regardless of the crime they are suspected of committing, everyone has the right to a fair trial and to be punished according to the law.
