TAIWAN – AUGUST 19, 2026 Three people died in a serious traffic accident that occurred on a section of National Freeway 1 in Sanya. The accident began with a collision between a van driven by 45-year-old Jiang and a Tesla driven by 36-year-old Li. After the collision, both drivers got out of their vehicles and remained standing on the road to deal with the situation. At that moment, a Volvo driven by 51-year-old Lin crashed into the wrecked vehicles from behind at high speed.
In the subsequent impact, Jiang and Li were thrown onto the road. There was also a 62-year-old woman from the Philippines in the van, who sustained fatal injuries in the accident. Jiang and the Filipino woman died on August 19, while Li succumbed to her injuries the following morning.
The subsequent investigation showed that all three victims died from traumatic shock and massive blood loss caused by severe injuries to their limbs.
Volvo driver Lin was questioned in a wheelchair after the accident. However, she claimed that she could not remember how the accident happened. Prosecutors therefore have not yet completed her questioning and plan to question her again after her health condition stabilizes.
