The case was initially considered a possible targeted murder related to their journalistic work, since attacks on journalists are common in Mexico. However, the investigation later showed that the main motive was probably robbery. The women were allegedly lured into a trap by a man who offered them a favorable currency exchange rate, and were subsequently kidnapped, robbed, and murdered by a group of perpetrators in an abandoned building. The case showed not only the extreme brutality of the attack but also the danger associated with crime and scams in the Mexican capital.
