KIEV, UKRAINE – OCTOBER, 2023 Vika, 17, and Vova, 18, were half-siblings. They grew up together in a large but poor family with 10 children in the town of Berezan near Kiev. They fell in love, but society did not accept their incestuous relationship.

Despite the social backgrounds they came from, both of them could have had a good future. Vova studied high school and Vika even saved money to cover the cost of her future university studies. But six months before their suicide, they started using drugs, throwing away their mental health and their future along with them.
Forbidden love, the ridicule of society and the ruined mental health from drug use drove them to the most radical step. They fled together to Kiev in October 2023, where they rented an apartment together. There they decided to enjoy their last few beautiful moments together. They went for walks together and held hands and had lots of sex. Then they decided to end their affair by jumping from the 24th floor. They took their last dose of drugs together, went out on the balcony, professed their love for each other, made sure they both wanted to die, and then jumped down.
Their story, mainly due to their activity on the social networks Instagram and TikTok, sparked a great discussion across Ukrainian society. In particular, several of their older videos were discussed, in which they cautiously hinted that they were thinking about suicide.
