Welsh female backpacker found murdered at guesthouse in Thailand

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND – AUGUST 10, 2000 Twenty-three-year-old Welsh traveler Kirsty Jones set out on a several-month trip around the world in the summer of 2000. After completing her university studies, she wanted to explore new countries and gain experience before settling down and starting her career. In early August, she arrived in the Thai city of Chiang Mai, a popular destination among backpackers, where she checked into the budget Aree Guest House.

On August 10, 2000, the 23-year-old British woman was found dead in her room. Investigators determined that she had been raped and then strangled. Some guests reportedly heard screams coming from her room during the night, but no one realized at the time that a violent attack was taking place.

The case immediately attracted significant attention from both British and Thai media. Over the following years, police investigated numerous suspects, arrested several individuals, and repeatedly promised a breakthrough in the case. Despite this, they were never able to gather enough evidence against a specific perpetrator. Forensic experts obtained a DNA profile of the killer, but his identity remained unknown. The investigation was also criticized because of the alleged mishandling of the crime scene and other mistakes made during the first hours after the body was discovered.

The victim’s mother, Sue Jones, spent two decades seeking justice and worked closely with both British and Thai authorities. However, even after many years, new DNA analyses and additional leads failed to produce the expected breakthrough. In August 2020, the 20-year statute of limitations for prosecuting murder under Thai law at the time expired, and the case was officially closed.

The death of Kirsty Jones remains one of the most well-known unsolved murders of a foreign tourist in Thailand. Although biological evidence from the killer exists, his identity has never been established, and no one has ever been convicted of the crime.
