Young Brazilian teacher found murdered

BRAZIL – DECEMBER 5, 2014 23-year-old teacher, Janaína Câmara, who worked at a school in the Novo Gama area near the Brazilian Federal District, went missing. When she did not show up for work, her family immediately reported it and a search began. Two days later, her body was found in a remote overgrown area near the DF-290 highway between Santa Maria and Novo Gama.

According to the investigation, Janaína was found dead in a heavily devastated state, with a fatal head injury that caused skull fractures. The body was lying in bushes near the road and showed signs of extreme violence. Investigators later stated that at the time of death she was partially undressed, which raised suspicion of a possible sexual motive, although it was never possible to definitively confirm what exactly happened before her death.

The main suspect became her former partner, Heber dos Santos Freitas Ribas, with whom she had previously had a long-term relationship and with whom she had one of her three children. According to police, the couple had recently broken up after a period of conflict and alleged domestic violence. The investigation showed that the woman was reportedly afraid of his behavior and possible stalking after the breakup.

However, the case dragged on for years. Although the suspect was charged, the court proceedings were repeatedly delayed due to procedural issues, problems with witnesses, and complex appeals. In some stages, the case even risked stalling completely.

A major complication was also a change in Brazilian legislation. At the time of the crime, there was no femicide law (Lei do Feminicídio), which was only introduced in 2015. Because of this, the act could not be classified as femicide, but only as “ordinary” murder, which affected the legal classification and possible penalties.

Although the main suspect was eventually brought to trial, the case remains one of the best-known examples of long-term or drawn-out domestic violence cases in the region. The victim’s family is still waiting for a final verdict and closure of the case, which has caused a strong public reaction in Brazil due to the brutality of the crime and the slow justice process.
