11-year-old Chinese girl dies from carbon monoxide poisoning

CHINA 11-year-old girl was found lifeless in her bed. A team of forensic specialists was dispatched to the scene, where they documented the surroundings and the body and conducted an initial examination prior to the autopsy.

It was determined that the girl died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Toxicological signs of poisoning were visible on her face, which had a pinkish hue. Typical for this type of poisoning are also red areas on the back caused by the accumulation of carboxyhemoglobin. Foam at the nose does not always appear, but it is a known effect of pulmonary edema – oxygen deprivation overworks the heart, raising blood pressure in the lungs and pushing mucus mixed with blood out.

Carbon monoxide poisoning most often occurs in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces with incomplete fuel combustion. The most common cases involve faulty heating systems, indoor open flames, car exhaust in closed garages, fires, malfunctioning gas appliance vents, and clogged chimneys.

The danger of carbon monoxide lies in the fact that it is tasteless and odorless, earning it the nickname “silent killer.” People usually notice it only when it’s too late, through loss of consciousness. Inhaled CO binds to hemoglobin in the blood up to 200 times more strongly than oxygen, forming carboxyhemoglobin, which prevents oxygen from reaching tissues and the brain, leading to hypoxia.

First aid for carbon monoxide poisoning involves immediately moving the person to fresh air, clearing the airways, and calling emergency services. In hospitals, 100% oxygen is administered, and in better-equipped facilities, the patient may be placed in a hyperbaric chamber.

Fortunately, there is an inexpensive and effective defense against this silent killer: carbon monoxide detectors. They cost only a few dollars but can save your life by alerting you to the presence of CO before you lose consciousness.
