ISTANBUL, TURKEY – JANUARY 24, 2025 14-year-old boy was brutally murdered at a flea market in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul. Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi was buying some skateboard equipment at the market. Suddenly, a knife-wielding attacker lunges at him and starts stabbing him furiously. After Mattia falls to the ground, the second attacker kicks him. The incident was caught on security camera.

Mattia was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. But he died there on 10 February after a two-week battle for life.

The two attackers were identified and arrested. They were also only teenagers: 14-year-old Berkay Budak (the stabber) and his 16-year-old accomplice, whose identity was only revealed as UB.

Both attackers have been charged with manslaughter and are currently still awaiting trial. The prosecution is seeking sentences ranging from 18 to 24 years. However, they cannot be given full sentences because they are not yet adults.

Anecdotal information says that the motive for the attack was only that the boys accidentally bumped into each other in a crowded marketplace. Mattia apologised saying “sorry, brother”. It was the word “brother” that was supposed to have pissed Berkay off so much that he decided to kill.
