IRAN – JANUARY 9, 2026 Economic crisis and hyperinflation have driven massive numbers of protesters onto the streets of nearly all Iranian cities. Although Iran has experienced waves of protests for decades, the wave that began on December 28, 2025, is truly massive and may pose a serious challenge to the country’s authoritarian government.
In an effort to suppress the protests, the Iranian government deployed police, military, and Revolutionary Guards to the streets. Their actions repeatedly violate basic human rights and have drawn international attention. There are documented cases of lethal force being used against unarmed civilians, including live ammunition. This has already resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries. The exact numbers are unknown, as the government has cut off the entire country from internet access to avoid scrutiny.
Among the many protesters was 17-year-old Milad Hassanzadeh. Since early adolescence, he had been a member of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement and fought for a better future for his country. On January 9, 2026, he unfortunately became one of the victims of the Iranian regime. He was hit by one of the bullets fired by Iranian armed forces and was hospitalized in critical condition, where he soon died.
