RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – FEBRUARY 8, 2024 Jefferson de Araújo Costa took part in a demonstration against the Prime Minister on Avenida Brasil next to Complexo da Maré in the city’s North Zone. But military cops who were supervising the order opened fire and hit Jefferson in the stomach.
This police action aroused indignation in local residents. They claim that Jefferson was peacefully demonstrating, was not armed and did not even try to attack the Prime Minister.
Further outrage was aroused by the fact that the fatally shot Jefferson lay in agony on the pavement for more than 10 minutes without receiving any help. Police cars drove by, completely ignoring the wounded man.
The name of the police officer was never released. But the state authorities promised to investigate the case fairly. Two other people were injured during this demonstration. One was shot in the leg, the other in the buttocks. However, both were brought to a stable condition at Evandro Freire hospital.
