2011 Norway attacks

OSLO & UTØYA, NORWAY – JULY 22, 2011 The attacks in Norway in 2011 stand as one of the darkest moments in the country’s modern history. On July 22, 2011, right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik carried out two deadly attacks that claimed the lives of 77 people. The first attack took place in Oslo’s city center, where Breivik detonated a bomb, followed by a massacre on the island of Utøya, where he systematically shot young participants of a summer camp.

Breivik began his plan by detonating an explosive device in a car parked near government buildings in Oslo. The blast, equivalent to over a ton of TNT, caused massive damage. Eight people were killed on the spot, many others were seriously injured. The explosion shattered windows, destroyed vehicles, and filled the streets with smoke and screams. Among the victims were civil servants and bystanders, tragically caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

After this horrific act, Breivik moved to Utøya, an island about 40 kilometers from Oslo. There, the annual summer camp of the Labour Party’s youth organization (AUF) was taking place. Dressed in a police uniform, Breivik arrived on the island around 5:00 PM, pretending to be a police officer sent to ensure security following the bomb attack in Oslo. However, once among the young campers, he pulled out his weapons and began shooting them in cold blood.

The victims tried to flee, hiding in the woods and on the shores of the island, some attempting to swim to safety, but Breivik relentlessly pursued them. He shot at defenseless young people who desperately begged for help. Among the dead were children as young as 14, like Johannes Buø, who was killed while trying to hide in the woods. Ingrid Berg Heggelund, aged sixteen, was shot while attempting to shelter with friends in a rock crevice near the water. Witnesses said that Breivik approached wounded victims lying on the ground and shot them again to ensure they were dead.

The testimonies of survivors are harrowing. Young people hiding in the forest or under rocks heard footsteps approaching and the chilling sound of gunfire echoing across the island. Some heard Breivik shouting that everyone must die. A girl named Emma Martinovic later recounted how she hid with several other children in the woods, only to witness Breivik approaching a group and shooting them from a few meters away. “Everyone I knew was either dead or wounded,” she said through tears, describing the moment she saw her friends murdered.

Desperation and fear were palpable. Some called their parents, pleading for help as they tried to escape. Sixteen-year-old Viljar Hanssen was shot in the head and lost sight in one eye. Though he survived, his younger brother Tore, aged fifteen, was among those who perished on the beach, trying to flee. By the time the rescue operation was launched and police finally arrived on the scene, Breivik had killed 69 people, most of them teenagers participating in discussions about their country’s future.

Breivik, who remained calm and methodical throughout, was eventually arrested without any resistance. Armed with a Ruger Mini-14 rifle and Glock pistols, he confessed to the massacre when police detained him, showing no signs of remorse. In court, he stated that he was aware of the horror he had caused but claimed that his actions were “necessary” to stop the spread of multiculturalism and Islam in Europe.

The horror Breivik unleashed on Utøya forever scarred not only the survivors and families of the victims but the entire Norwegian society. The loss was immense—young people with their whole lives ahead of them were murdered in the moment when they were most vulnerable. The echoes of this tragedy will remain etched in Norway’s memory forever.
