The club was hosting an event called Latin Night, which attracted a large number of attendees, many of whom were of Latin American descent. Shortly after 2 a.m., Mateen opened fire on the club’s patrons and employees. The situation subsequently turned into a hostage crisis when the attacker barricaded himself inside the club with some of the people present.
The police operation lasted several hours. Before 5 a.m., special units began preparing to forcibly enter the areas where the shooter was located. At around 5:15 a.m., Mateen was shot and killed during the police operation. Emergency responders then continued evacuating survivors and assisting the wounded.
During the incident, Mateen called the 911 emergency line and pledged allegiance to the leader of the so-called Islamic State. The FBI investigated the attack as an act of terrorism. The massacre became one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history and left a profound impact on the victims’ families and the entire LGBTQ+ community.
