LUANDA, ANGOLA – JULY, 2025 Four people were killed and hundreds more arrested during protests against fuel price hikes in Angola’s capital, Luanda. The protests erupted after the government decided to raise diesel prices by 30%, which also led to a significant increase in minibus fares, the main mode of transport for many Angolans.
During the protests, clashes with police, looting of shops, and damage to vehicles were reported. Police used tear gas and gunfire, with Human Rights Watch criticizing the excessive use of force. The protests have been ongoing since July 1 and have sparked strong public backlash, particularly among poorer residents, while the government has been gradually reducing fuel subsidies since 2023.
