CHAMPOTÓN, CAMPECHE, MEXICO – JULY 1, 2024 21-year-old military cadet Emmanuel Velázquez Escobar died during a training parachute jump when his parachute failed to open. The incident occurred at the airborne military center in Champotón.

During the exercise, eight cadets jumped from the helicopter, including Emmanuel. All except him landed safely on the ground. Emmanuel plummeted at full speed from a height of at least 150 feet. The force of his impact with the ground created a crater, and he was declared dead on the spot.
Emmanuel Velázquez Escobar was a 21-year-old cadet at the Mexican Naval Academy. In 2024, he was in his second year of the Basic Paratrooper Course with the Mexican Marine Infantry (Secretaría de Marina – SEMAR). The jump was his fifth and was supposed to be his final one before completing the course. After his death, SEMAR expressed deep condolences to his family and launched an investigation into the cause of the parachute failure.
