MEXICO Young man committed several armed robberies in an area controlled by a drug cartel. When his identity was revealed based on footage from security cameras, he was quickly captured and punished according to the cartel’s laws. First, his hand was cut off with a machete while he was still alive, and then he was executed with a shot to the head.
Drug cartels are by no means a model of good behavior, but it is often in their business interest to maintain order in their territory. They dislike police presence and prefer to avoid attracting attention. At the same time, they try to keep good relations with local residents and pretend that such actions are meant to protect them.
Even though such punishments may seem quick and effective at first glance, in reality, they are among the worst possible crimes. Even the worst thief has the right to life and a fair trial. This kind of behavior by cartels is a clear reason to say no to drugs – especially cocaine – and to stay far away from criminal groups like these. Their respect for human life is nonexistent.
