NEGRIL, JAMAICA – OCTOBER 28, 2025 Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica, marking the most powerful storm to hit the island in the past hundred years, according to meteorologists. The Category 5 hurricane brought winds exceeding 180 miles per hour (290 kph), massive flooding, and extensive damage to infrastructure and residential areas.
The Jamaican government declared the entire country a disaster zone. Thousands of people lost their homes, and the island was left without electricity and drinking water. Rescue teams are still searching for the missing, and officials estimate that full recovery could take several months. After sweeping across Jamaica, Melissa turned toward Cuba, where it made landfall a day later, weakened to Category 4 strength.
One of the victims was this man, on whom a large shipping container fell and crushed him. Only his head and arm remained sticking out. The sight shocked a passerby who recorded it on video.
