Murder of Iranian bodybuilder & execution of his killer

KARAJ, IRAN In July 2011, Iran was shaken by an incident that quickly captured national attention. Rouhollah Dadashi, a well-known Iranian bodybuilder and one of the country’s most prominent strongmen, became the victim of a violent street confrontation in Karaj. During a heated argument, a teenager named Alireza Mollasoltani stabbed Dadashi, causing injuries that proved fatal. The entire altercation lasted only moments, yet its consequences resonated far beyond that night.

Mollasoltani was arrested and, after a relatively quick trial, sentenced to death. Because he was under 18 at the time of the killing, the case drew significant international criticism. Human rights organizations, the European Union, and the United Nations condemned Iran for executing a minor and accused the country of violating the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Dadashi’s family, however, strongly rejected these reactions. His brother, Ali Dadashi, insisted that the murder had been turned into a political tool and emphasized that the execution represented not only the family’s wish but also the desire of many people who sought greater public safety.

The execution was ultimately carried out publicly, intensifying the divide between domestic approval and international outrage. To some, the case highlighted the severity of Iran’s justice system toward young offenders; to others, it was seen as a justified response to a brutal crime that took the life of a beloved athlete. The story of Dadashi and Mollasoltani remains a symbol of broader debates about justice, punishment, and human rights in contemporary Iran.
