SHANTOU, GUANGDONG PROVINCE, CHINA – FEBRUARY 26, 2026 Ten-year-old girl was given permission by a handler to enter a restricted zone so she could feed a lion from close proximity. However, the beast lunged in a flash, grabbed the girl by her leg, and tried to pull her through the bars into the enclosure.
Thanks to the quick intervention of the staff, the child was freed, and the girl escaped with only minor scratches and shock. The incident sparked a wave of criticism due to the gross violation of safety rules. The handler was immediately dismissed, and the entire zoo was closed until further notice for a safety protocol inspection.
