MINAB, HORMOZGAN, IRAN – FEBRUARY 28, 2026 During the first day of the war between Iran and the coalition led by the United States and Israel, a missile strike hit Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in the city of Minab in southern Iran. Classes were in session at the time of the attack, and hundreds of students and teachers were inside the school. The explosion destroyed a large part of the building, and its roof collapsed onto the children and school staff.
The reported death toll varies between sources. Iranian authorities initially reported 168 deaths immediately after the attack, but later revised the figure to 165. After the identification of the bodies was completed, the local prosecutor’s office announced a final death toll of 156, including 120 students, 26 female teachers, seven parents, a school bus driver, and a worker from a nearby clinic.
The school was located very close to a base of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which is considered one possible reason why it was struck. However, open-source evidence, satellite imagery, and several independent investigations concluded that the destroyed building was indeed a school and not a military facility. The United States stated that the strike on the school was not intentional and launched an investigation, while Iran described the incident as a war crime. The United Nations, UNICEF, and UNESCO also called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the attack.
