TURÉN, PORTUGUESA, VENEZUELA – FEBRUARY, 2021 Venezuelan city of Turén was shaken by a series of brutal murders of young women. Within just a few days, the bodies of 17-year-old Eliannys Andreína Martínez Roñoz and 20-year-old Eduarlys Carolina Falcón Torrealba were found. According to investigators, both women suffered physical and sexual violence before their deaths and died as a result of strangulation.
Eliannys Andreína Martínez Roñoz disappeared on Sunday, February 21, 2021. According to available information, she left her home in the La Misión area to attend an evangelical church service, but she never arrived. The following day, her body was found on an abandoned property in the Turén area. There were visible signs of physical and sexual assault on her body. Her shoes, mobile phone cases, and a condom were found nearby.

Shortly afterward, 20-year-old Eduarlys Carolina Falcón Torrealba also disappeared. On February 22, she left home on a bicycle to go to a gym, but she never arrived. Her family subsequently began searching for her. The young woman’s body was discovered the following day near the Las Marías bridge. As in Eliannys’ case, signs of sexual violence and strangulation were found on her body.

Investigators began linking the two cases and focused on Nelson Antonio Torrealba Saavedra, who was reportedly 38 years old at the time of the events according to most sources. Some media outlets, however, reported his age as 39. The suspect was eventually reported to police by his own wife. Torrealba reportedly told her that he had committed a serious crime and that he needed to flee the house because police were searching for him. When she learned about the murders of the young women, she realized what her husband was referring to and contacted the authorities.
Police subsequently tracked down Nelson Antonio Torrealba Saavedra near the Las Marías River in Turén, where he was reportedly hiding. He was arrested on February 27, 2021. According to Venezuelan authorities, he confessed to the murders after his arrest and described to investigators how he had killed the women.
According to then-Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab, both victims died from mechanical asphyxiation caused by strangulation. A flexible vine known as bejuco was reportedly used as the instrument. The investigation also stated that both women had been sexually assaulted before their deaths.
Nelson Antonio Torrealba Saavedra was subsequently charged with femicide with the aggravating circumstance of sexual violence. A court in Portuguesa ordered him to be held in pretrial detention and designated the Centro Penitenciario David Viloria prison in Lara state as the place of detention. At the time, the crime carried a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
