KOLKATA, WEST BENGAL, INDIA – AUGUST 9, 2024 31-year-old doctor Moumita Debnath was found dead in a seminar room at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. She had gone there to rest after a long shift. The autopsy confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted and murdered by strangulation. Her body also showed numerous injuries.

The following day, police arrested 33-year-old Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer. CCTV footage captured his movements inside the hospital, and forensic analysis linked his DNA, hair, and blood traces found on his clothing and footwear to the victim.

In January 2025, Sanjay Roy was found guilty of rape and murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The CBI is demanding that he be sentenced to death instead. The case sparked widespread protests across India and brought renewed attention to the safety of healthcare workers.
